VERIFY: No, the flashing headlights gang initiation warning is not legit

It says if you see a moving car with headlights off, don't flash at them. It's an initiation for the Bloods gang.

WASHINGTON -- The Verify team shows you the process of how we fact-check the social media claims you see trending online.

A viewer sent us a viral warning he recently came across.

It says if you see a moving car with headlights off, don't flash at them. It's an initiation for the Bloods gang.

And if you're the first car to signal, they'll tail your vehicle and shoot you in order to be accepted as a new gang member.

To find out if this is true, Verify researchers traced this urban legend back to articles from the 1980s and 1990s supposedly from coming from on obscure "police" or "fire" station.

This particular warning claims to be from an electronic security company, Chubb, in South Africa. They've been working to shut down the rumor since 2009.

The company said In a statement.."Chubb South Africa DID NOT endorse this statement…Chubb South Africa strongly requests further dissemination of this information is stopped by the mere action of not forwarding it."

So we verified flashing your headlights at a car, is NOT part of a gang initiation.
