Yes, some T-Mobile customers will get a notice their plan is changing

On Oct. 17, a text will be sent to some T-Mobile customers letting them know their plan and rate is changing. The customers have the option to opt out.

UPDATE, OCT. 27, 2023: During an Oct. 25 quarterly earnings call, T-Mobile CEO G. Michael Sievert said they are no longer moving customers with legacy plans into new rate plans. The original story published on Oct. 13 appears below.

Millions of people across the U.S. rely on T-Mobile as their cell phone provider.

Some of those customers could soon see their plans changing and rates increasing, according to viral social media posts.

“T-Mobile is forcibly (& automatically) raising prices on customer phone plans,” the text on one TikTok video says

According to an allegedly leaked document first posted to Reddit, T-Mobile is “performing a rate plan migration of a small portion of consumer and business accounts to newer rate plans, starting with the November bill cycle.”

Several VERIFY readers, including Kim, asked us if it’s true T-Mobile customers are being forced into different plans.

WHAT WE FOUND

Oct. 17, some T-Mobile customers will be getting a text and/or email alert that their plan and rate are changing. According to T-Mobile, this doesn’t affect every T-Mobile customer and the customer can choose to opt out.

Several T-Mobile representatives told VERIFY on Oct. 17 some customers with older plans will receive a text and email notification that their current plan is “moving” to a new plan.

When asked about a list of affected plans, a T-Mobile representative said: “At this time, I don’t have a set of plans that will be impacted, just that if a customer is impacted, they will get the SMS [text] and email soon.”

“If they opt out they will keep the same plan without any issues, not every account on older plans will be impacted, if an account is impacted they will get the messages on 10/17 and they will have to reach out to opt out at that point,” one representative told VERIFY.

According to its terms and conditions, T-Mobile has the right to change, suspend or terminate any services at any time unless the customer has a price lock guarantee, including the “Un-Contract Promise.” This is similar to the policies of other major cell phone carriers.

T-Mobile did not provide comment to VERIFY by the time of publishing if those customers who opt out of the upcoming plan change would be charged extra per line.

T-Mobile hasn’t raised the rates for any customer since they merged with Sprint in 2019. Per the terms of the merger, the company had to agree to keep current or better rate plans for three years, according to the Federal Communications Commission order approving the merger.
